Programs

The Sunset PTA prides itself on the programs and projects that we undertake and support. We are committed to the success of every child in our school and strive to promote a positive working relationship with faculty and staff. Our goal is to offer our families many activities throughout the school year.
Listed below are the Programs the PTA will offer for the 2011-12 school year.  The success of each program requires the assistance of many dedicated volunteers.  If you are interested in helping to organize, chair/co-chair, or volunteer for an event, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Julie Hoyt, or the listed committee chair for more information.

All Pro Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact.  It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria or a local restaurant.  During this time, they discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and are equipped with resources to strengthen their relationship.  For more about All Pro Dad’s Day, please click the image to watch a short video.

Reflections: As a National PTA program, Reflections offers students the opportunity to pursue artistic expression by creating works of art for fun and recognition in six areas: visual arts, music, photography, film/video production, dance choreography and literature.  Entries, based on a given theme, are judged by a panel of local judges.  Click on the Reflections tab for more information.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation: This is an opportunity to show our teachers and staff our appreciation for all they do for our children and the school.  Activities include back-to-school goodies, stipend for purchases at the PTA store, a staff lunch or tea, and homemade gifts/letters/cards of appreciation from students and their families.

Boxtops for Education: Collect boxtops and submit as needed.

School Directory: Sunset PTA develops and prints the Sunset Student Directories that are distributed to the students.

National Reading Month Promotion: Introduced in 2010, theSunset PTA provided teachers with promotion materials (reading charts, stars to mark books read), to encourage children to read during the National Reading Month.

Sunset Gives Back: Introduced in 2010, the PTA asks parents to donate school supplies at the beginning of the year to distribute to needy children at Sunset Elementary.

Required Reading Recycle Program: This is a program to encourage recycling of books and saving a tree.  Students bring in their required reading and Book Group books from the previous year to be distributed to needy children that year.

Media Center Helpers: Libraries are important to children throughout their formal education and beyond.  You can make a real contribution to your child’s introduction to libraries by volunteering in the Media Center.  Hours are flexible-come in on a regular basis, or twice a year during inventory and clean-up days.

Administrative Support: We at the PTA work closely with the Sunset Elementary faculty to provide support where needed, at school-sponsored events, and other items such as additional police staff for morning drop-off, refreshments at Career Day, etc.

Book Swap: A swap event where students donate their outgrown, gently used paperback children's books. Kids can then select "new" books to call their own. We are very excited to  offer it during this school year.

Lost & Found: Each day, forgotten clothing and lunch boxes are collected and brought to the Lost & Found located next to the school garden. Valuables left on campus are brought to the office. Unclaimed items are donated to a charity organization at the winter, spring and summer breaks. Please label clothing, backpacks, and lunch boxes with first and last names.
